Gryffin (also known as Dan Griffith) hit New York City Friday night to close out the last leg of his Whole Heart Live Tour. The month-long tour also marks the close of a momentous year for the New York-based musician—who has already released two Billboard chart topping singles on Darkroom/Interscope Records in 2016 (“Heading Home”, his debut single, also taking Spotify’s number 1 position on their Viral 50 chart).

As a performing artist Gryffin makes a sport out of EDM. Trained as a classical pianist from the age of 7, he has an adept perspective on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to melody and lyrics. While he’s admitted that when he began making music he only intended for it to be played by friends at college parties, he’s become somewhat of a global sensation overnight (and for good reason).

What Gryffin does on stage (and on record) is something rarely seen in the world of DJs—he steps out from behind his turntable, without hesitation, to grab a guitar or stroke the keys of his piano in-between mixing. It’s a multi-platformed/multi-instrumental performance that ultimately creates an entirely new landscape for music (not only audibly, but visually as well). On Friday night at Irving Plaza he had a calm presence about him and a smile strewn across his face—maybe even one of disbelief, that his tour has continued to fill iconic venues as the energy of the crowd has continued match (both in greatness and in size). Gryffin creates an atmosphere that is full of camaraderie and love; there is a shared sense of adoration when remixes of Tove Lo’s “Talking Body” and The Weeknd’s “Starboy” are explored by Gryffin’s musings. As a whole, Gryffin commands the attention of fans and newcomers—as he continues to warp our perceptions of songs both new and old.
