Hayley Kiyoko and A R I Z O N A live in New York City
The Studio at Webster Hall played host to a slew of talented young artists Wednesday night. Kicking things off were A R I Z O N A (a trio of eclectic songwriters, musicians and producers) and settling the evening was Hayley Kiyoko (an actress, activist and rising pop star). As a whole, the evening was nothing short of wonder, grace and good vibrations.
A R I Z O N A are newer to the music industry than Kiyoko (who has been performing professionally since 2007, although her solo career is much more nubile). Despite having less than two years of experience together, the band is nowhere near lacking in talent and harmony. On stage, they ride the pop beats of their hits “I Was Wrong” and “Cross My Mind” (both released on Atlantic in 2016). The group, who is currently working on their debut album, took an audience full of eager tweens and early twenty-somethings to a completely new level as they charmed with their boyish smiles and cool beats.
Kiyoko hit the stage fresh off her latest music video release for “One Bad Night,” which Kiyoko herself directed and which features transgender YouTube personality Erin Armstrong. It carries with it a strong message about trans violence. If there’s one thing to be noted about Kiyoko it’s that she is a masterful storyteller–she continuously creates a platform and narrative for younger generations and bridges the gap with older generations through her magnetic personality and inspiring messages (all without having released a full length album to-date). Kiyoko released her EP Citrine (Atlantic Records, 2016) less than two months ago and continues to garner attention and acclaim from the likes of Vice, Billboard and The Fader (to name only a few).
By the time Kiyoko’s set rolled around, the crowd was a buzz (chanting the songstresses name and singing bits of chorus from “Girls Like Girls”). Kiyoko has an air about her that makes any room feel completely at home, inducing a natural “safe space” (as she boldly states) at her concerts. She is at ease on stage and incredibly humble (at times almost brought to tears, in awe to be playing in front of a crowd that sings her songs like anthems). Kiyoko is, beyond doubt, about to make major waves in the industry as fans and critics alike wait to see what she has in store next.
