TUnE-yArDs closed out the last in a series of free shows presented this summer by BRIC (via their Celebrate Brooklyn! initiative) this Saturday night. To say the very least, there was an incredible amount of hype surrounding the show, and rightly so.

tUnE-yArDs, fronted by New England native Merrill Garbus, has received international acclaim since debuting their unique and experimental rhythms back in 2006; their latest release “Nikki Nack” (2014 on 4AD Records) was no exception, receiving almost unanimous praise from critics across the board. With continued support and interest in Garbus’ work, it’s no wonder that lines to gain entry into Prospect Park’s Bandshell continued to grow as the evening progressed.

There is little negative criticism that can be said about Garbus or her stage presence. Opening the set with escalating autotune of the word “Brooklyn”, Garbus charmed the crowd the moment she stepped foot on stage. Accompanied by some incredible talent there after (Haley Dekle/Dirty Projectors, Nate Brenner, Moria Smiley, among others), Garbus was able to seamlessly move from hit after hit after hit (having had a multitude of songs featured on shows like “Weeds” and “Orange is the New Black” over the past years, it’s hard for those who aren’t entirely familiar with tUnE-yArDs stylings to escape her concerts without hearing one song they know). It was, all in all, the perfect way to end another epic season of Celebrate Brooklyn!.
