British singer/songwriter Tom Odell released his first studio album in 2012 and almost immediately garnered critical acclaim (nabbing the BRITs Critic’s Choice Award in 2013). Since then, Odell has been busy grabbing nominations from MTV and BBC, topping the charts, and releasing two more albums—the most recent, Jubilee Road(Columbia, 2018.) In 2019, Odell took to the road to showcase his latest release stopping by New York City’s Irving Plaza on Tuesday night.

There was a quiet clamor that washed over the room early in the evening; it resonated as the moments drew closer Odell’s performance. Odell’s indie/folk/pop infusion draws a wide array of fanfare, and it’s with good reason. Odell’s songs invite their audience to another plane, one that is intimate, vulnerable, and very quantifiable. On the piano, Odell is a magician. Seamlessly stroking each key with fervor while beautifully belting out songs like “Still Getting Used to Being On My Own”,  “Grow Old with Me”, and “Half as Good as You”. Odell is a master of charm when it comes to his audience, as he gracefully leaps from his piano into the crowd between songs. There is a certain flow to the show that works (no frills, no thrills, just stripped-down music and raw talent). As a live act, Tom Odell is captivating, flawless, and not to be missed.
