At the age of 23 Tash Sultana is already taking the world by storm. Notable for her sultry voice and luscious lyrics, what ultimately sets Sultana apart is her overarching musical prowess (from her utterly tearing guitar solos to her mind-boggling piano strokes). Listening to the Australian artist and watching her perform are two completely separate beasts–songs like “Blackbird” off her sophomore album (Lonely Lands Records/Mom+Pop, 2018) illustrate this vividly. In 2018, Sultana took her mastery of music on tour–stopping by New York City’s Terminal 5 over the weekend.

With swirling anticipation Sultana set foot on stage behind a hodgepodge of equipment; her only real backup, a landscape of lights that flickered from a prism of screens set behind her throughout her performance. There is an ecstasy and agony as the barefoot beauty performs each song with an unparalleled passion–it’s not entirely crazy to think that she might set her guitar on fire if it doesn’t set her on fire first. She’s collected and charismatic between sets; it’s clear Sultana has made herself at home on stage (her adoring, often screaming, fans are part of the charm). There’s an altogether insatiable element to Sultana’s performance, one that words alone could never do justice to. She is an incredibly rare talent and a live act that shouldn’t be missed.
