Humble is the word that ubiquitously describes G-Eazy, and rightly so; the young rapper, also known as Gerald Earl Gillum, triumphed over his own adversities (including the death of his mother from a drug overdose) to find his ascension to fame (now as a Billboard topping recording artist). His latest studio album, When It’s Dark Out (RCA, 2015), embodies a very mature sound and message (while not so subtly featuring a slew of all-star collaborations with Bebe Rexha, Chris Brown and Big Sean among others). In 2016 G-Eazy hit the road in support of the album on “The Endless Summer Tour,” with from Logic, YG and Yo Gotti. Tuesday night the tour stopped off in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.

G-Eazy took the stage with a new understanding of performance, one that translates to his audience as pure compassion and kinship; he treats his show as a family gathering where there’s a sense of love and of gratitude. Adding to the aura are a slew of special guests—like New York’s own Jadakiss and tour opener Yo Gotti—who make the East Coast stage seem like a home away from home (Gerald himself hailing from California’s Bay Area). As the set moved into the night, there was a clear impression that G-Eazy and his audience shared a mutual and genuine respect for hip-hop; hands bounced up and down in the air as waves of energy pulsed through Barclays. As a whole, G-Eazy brought the house down with his insanely catchy beats and boyishly edgy charm. With a rumored album set to be released later in the year and collaborations on various soundtracks this summer, fans and newcomers are bound to fall in love with G-Eazy over and over again (he may, in fact, be the next greatest thing on the hip-hop scene if he hasn’t already nabbed the title).
