Birdy live at Irving Plaza
Birdy, more formally known as Jasmine van den Bogaerde, has been riding a musical high since early childhood—eventually becoming a renowned singer and songwriter at only 20 years old. Hailing from Britain, the starlet began playing the piano at 7 and by 12 had already nabbed the coveted first place prize in Open Mic UK (a talent contest, wherein she ousted some nearly 10,000 other competitors for the win). It wasn’t until the age of 14 that Birdy really spread her wings and reached an international audience with her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”. In 2016, Birdy returns with her third studio album Beautiful Lies (Atlantic Records) and an international tour in support of the album—last Thursday she stopped back at New York City’s Irving Plaza (supporting Christina Perri years ago and headlining/selling out on her own this time around).
Birdy’s live performance is akin to an evening of complete emotional immersion—her sound is as crisp an clear as a studio recording, with a touch of intimacy, humor, and love. There is a character and charm to the singer as she completely mesmerizes her fans with hit songs like “Keeping Your Head Up” and “Wild Horses”. Birdy appears humble and almost coy as she showcases her vocal and piano prowess. As a whole, the indie folk princess puts on an incredible and altogether striking performance.
