Boston Calling has grown, over the past 7 years, to be one of the most lauded music festivals in New England. Hosting 32 musical acts may not make the festival seem like a contender among the larger festivals, but it masterfully makes up for any shortcomings (in size) by creating a uniquely diverse soundscape (with music ranging from alternative, pop, rap, soul, rock, and electronic genres). The curation (thanks largely to Aaron Dessner, The National) of Boston Calling allows fans to immerse themselves in a completely unique experience, broadening their musical horizon and eliminating the stress of having to choose between conflicting sets—in fact, it makes it almost impossible miss a single moment of the festivities. 2016 brought with it massive headliners Sia, Robyn, and Disclosure, while introducing heavy-hitters like Courtney Barnett, Christine & The Queens, HAIM, Miike Snow, Janelle Monáe, Sufjan Stevens, BØRNS, Elle King, Charles Bradley, and Vince Staples into the mix. This year’s festival also brought with it a comedy line-up and next year will further incorporate film and visual art into the mix, proving that Boston Calling has already begun to outgrow the quaint downtown City Hall Plaza; next year’s festival will be held on the greens of Harvard, no doubt allowing the festival to live up to its full potential.
