Imagine Dragons returned to New York City, via Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, on Tuesday night in support of their sophomore album “Smoke + Mirrors” (released earlier this year on KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records). The tour, which kicked on off last month, marked the Grammy Award-winning band’s triumphant and emotional return to the city–lead singer Dan Reynolds noting the band’s modest beginnings at Manhattan’s Pianos club (taking them from a 160 capacity venue to a 18,000 capacity arena in less than 5 years time).

Fans of Imagine Dragons know that this band has a reputation for putting on high energy shows, and while they (as a whole) seemed less theatrical than on their previous “Night Visions” tour, this tour translated as a more intimate and connected experience. Imagine Dragons, despite their worldwide success, are incredibly humbled by their fans; an asset which grants them the unique ability to relate on a more personal level. Having a knack, which Imagine Dragons certainly does, for making their fans feel at home among crowds of countless sizes is one thing, but enacting this through a stage that is almost on level with the audience, direct and multiple interactions with the audience, and a sense of gratitude that is constant makes the whole experience seem personal (at one point Dan brought a fan on stage, introduced him, shared a personal anecdote about him, and reiterated how it truly is the fans that continue to keep Imagine Dragons on top of the rock charts).

Those who came to hear hits from the band’s freshman album were not disappointed, and those who may not have been entirely familiar with “Smoke +Mirrors” were given an introduction to the evolving sound of Imagine Dragons–one that continues to be challenged by raw vocals and rock worthy acoustics. Metric opened.
